Jimmy Aquino LOVES Batman: The Black Mirror AND Criminal: The Last of the Innocent
Been a bit behind in some comic book reading and completely missed the Batman run leading up to the New 52. I heard good things and wanted to check it out. Plus, my pal Francesco Francavilla was doing art chores along with Jock. So, when the storyline was collected into the hardcover trade paperback Batman: The Black Mirror, I just had to pick it up. Written by Scott Snyder, this deals with Dick Grayson as Batman. As previously mentioned, Francavilla and Jock shared art duties. Both dynamic in their own right and both amazingly awesome. The story is so compelling and keeps you on the edge of your seat. Briefly, a Gordon (as in Commissioner and Barbara) returns to the fold and all sorts of trouble begins to brew. Throw in The Joker at one point and some other familiar characters and you get a haunting tale of extreme family dysfunction. I’ll be mentioning/reviewing it on my podcast (COMIC NEWS INSIDER) next Tuesday night so tune in for more details! Meanwhile, go pick it up and read it!
Still catching up on comics as I’m wont to do near the end of the year.Criminal: The Last of the Innocent is the collected trade of the 4 issue mini-series from earlier this year. I picked up the first issue and for some reason or another, lost track of it and never got the rest. Finally got the trade and read it straight through. GODDAMMIT!!!! Ed Brubaker and Sean Phillips do NOT fuck around when it comes to crime noir. They mix crime noir with an homage to Archie comics. Yes, crime noir and Archie. You heard me. And it’s brilliant. Once again, I’ll be reviewing it on Tuesday’s recording of my podcast, Comic News Insider. Download it when it’s up and hear the rest!

Jimmy flies solo since everyone is recovering from their Christmas hangovers. It’s a quickie but full of CNI goodness! He briefly (promise) talks about seeing his family on Christmas, some out of town friends and the little girl Riley who blew up the internet with her marketing rant. News includes: Nexus returns in Dark Horse Presents, Golden Apple comic book store goes on sale, Comicraft annual font sale is coming, and the Spider-Man PSA trade has been altered in a drastic way. Some great feedback from CNI’s first celebrity interview Olivia d’Abo and her recent best actress nomination that you can vote on over at BroadwayWorld.com. As always, the Top 3 and more! Leave your iTunes comments! 5 stars and nothing but love!
You guys remember Olivia d’Abo, right? A fine actress and obviously one of the most beautiful women in the world. You may remember her from way back in the day as the big sister Karen on The Wonder Years and I loved her in Conan the Destroyer. She has worked steadily over the years.
Back in 2006, she was our first celebrity interview on my podcast COMIC NEWS INSIDER way back in Episode 30. (Yup, that’s us up there with old co-host Joe). She had been doing voice over work for animation including many of the DC direct to video cartoons and one of my faves, Invader Zim. We stayed in touch over the years and it’s been fun watching her continue to work. For the nerd in me, she continues to do voice over work (most recently on the Star Wars: The Clone Wars cartoon). She’s also a fantastic singer and I’ve seen her perform live. She was so sweet to take a minute to say hi and chat (while still on stage performing) when she saw me. Proving to my friends in attendance that I actually knew her. Haha. She did an amazing critically/fan praised performance as the creepy Nicole Wallace on Law and Order: Criminal Intent. And let’s not forget her exceptional work in her Broadway debut (lauded by all) doing The Odd Couple with Matthew Broderick and Nathan Lane.
Currently, she has been in L.A. performing in an old Joe Orton play called Entertaining Mr. Sloane. It has garnered much attention and already won some awards with talk of possibly continuing it in NYC. And because of her awesome performance, Olivia has been nominated for “Best Leading Actress in a Play (Local)” by BroadwayWorld.com. She is ahead in votes for her category but it is coming down to the wire. So, I ask you all to go on over and vote! It only takes a minute or so. We’ve emailed back and forth recently and she promised to take me to dinner when she gets back to NYC next year. I’d like it to be a celebratory one! :)
GO VOTE AND SPREAD THE WORD! OLIVIA D’ABO FOR QUEEN OF THE EARTH! Oh wait, no…I mean, the thing I mentioned above. She’ll eventually just become The Queen, I’m sure.
Think of it as your Christmas gift to me by voting for Olivia. That and the 50” flat screen TV your sending anyway.

p.s. My pal Casey McKinnon reminded me that she did an episode of Star Trek: The Next Generation. How could I forget that?! Nerd bonus!

Back in 2005, I dressed up as the recently deceased North Korean dictator Kim Jong-Il when I performed with my old sketch comedy group, Home Groan. I sang the brilliant number, “Don’t Try to Fight North Korea” to the tune of “Don’t Cry For Me Argentina” (as written by fellow sketch performer Lara Buck). I recycled the outfit a couple of years back for Halloween. Maybe I’ll dig it up again in his honor.

I just read the first trade of Nikolai Dante by Robbie Morrison and Simon Fraser (with a little art help from Charlie Adlard, Henry Flint and Chris Weston). Thanks to 2000AD/Rebellion for the review copy. I freakin loved it! Basic wiki plot for you:
“Set in the twenty-seventh century after a resurgent Imperial Russia has seized absolute control of both the entire Earth and an interstellar domain, the series follows Dante, a swashbuckling young thief and ladies’ man, as he discovers he is an illegitimate scion of the Romanov Dynasty, aristocratic rivals to the Tsar, Vladimir the Conqueror of the House of Makarov. Dante’s Romanov genes enable him to bond with a sentient “Weapons Crest”, a biological weapon which gives members of the dynasty superhuman abilities: in Dante’s case, the ability to extend bio-blades from his hands and hack into computer systems at will. He gleefully outrages aristocratic society and enjoys a turbulent relationship with the Tsar’s daughter Jena.”
Super fun, action packed, charming, funny and dangerous! Just like me. No wonder I like it so much!
Great. Now I’m going to have to go buy all of the rest of the trades so I can catch up on the story. Thanks a lot, 2000AD!
